"Business and IT Together"
Business Process initiatives are a uniquely perfect opportunity for business and technology professionals to work together to drive positive organizational change! Unlike virtually any other type of initiative, business process management and automation requires unprecedented collaboration between the business and IT teams not just from start to finish, but beyond. Distributed roles for ongoing maintenance and support are critical to ensuring that your organization's investment is positively leveraged and grown over time, not diluted or diminished. We work with our customers to define these roles and responsibilities for all phases of business process initiatives and, in this way, help our customers ensure fast and ongoing ROI and value.

"Be Rigorous"
Don't make the mistake of thinking that a data flow diagram constitutes your 'requirements'. Each step in your to-be process must be understood inside and out. Who the actors are, what the business rules are, what the user interface requirements specific to that step entail, what potential routes and offshoots may occur, etc. Our typical process requirements for a 30-step business process tend to run between 75 - 100 pages and incorporate a business process model as just one component. If you trivialize this important step, you are in danger of your business automation project not meeting your business user's true requirements! But don't worry, because it is absolutely doable! We do it successfully all the time. Contact us and we'll leverage our expertise to guide you through this critical step in your implementation.

"Requirements Gathering"
Gathering business requirements for business process automation initiatives is different than you might think. Focus on the 'current state' analysis only as background and context information for the 'to-be' state. So many organizations get stuck in analysis paralysis as they become overwhelmed by current exception-based processes. The key is to concentrate on your future process. Remember, the 'to-be' is different...with technology helping, you have options you never had from today's current state, so be sure to work with a technology and workflow expert to help you cross the chasm.

"Respect Your Systems of Record"
It is absolutely essential that the appropriate system of record be identified for each and every field element that touches your business process. For example, if your financial or ERP system is the system of record for vendors, and your process interacts or utilizes vendors as an entry or lookup point, be crucially aware of either leveraging real-time lookups against that system, or, if your business process application will be the data entry source, of pushing entered information at the appropriate time into that system. Very often, when requests are being facilitated by an automated business process, a 'timing' gate will need to be coordinated as part of your business process to 'transition' the system of record ownership from your system during data entry to the ultimate system of record at some point in the process. Make sure that your business process automation solution is 'time-aware' of which system of record is the 'master' at any point in time in your business process!
